What causes it

There’s rarely just one cause

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull. When it, or the muscles around it, are strained or irritated, pain can spread to your face, head and neck.

  1. i.

    Grinding & clenching

Bruxism puts heavy pressure on the joint and muscles. Many people do it in their sleep, or when stressed, without realising.

  2. ii.

    Stress & muscle tension

Constant strain on the jaw muscles can lead to inflammation and pain around the joint over time.

  3. iii.

    Bite misalignment

An uneven bite, from worn teeth, dental problems or injury, can put extra strain on the jaw joints.

How we help

Assess first, then treat

Treatment depends on how severe your symptoms are and what’s behind them. You’ll know your options and costs before anything starts.

  1. Dr Emad Eyal Salman talking a patient through an assessment in the chair

    Comprehensive TMJ assessment

We check your jaw movement, muscle tenderness, bite and symptoms, and talk through what you’ve been feeling.

  2. Dentist examining a patient's teeth and bite in the treatment chair

    Custom occlusal splints

A splint made for your bite, usually worn at night, to reduce the effects of grinding and clenching and protect your teeth from wear.

  3. Dentist putting on magnifying loupes before an examination

    Treatment for overactive jaw muscles

Where clinically appropriate, your dentist may discuss muscle-relaxing treatment for the jaw muscles. Suitability is assessed at your appointment.

Questions

TMJ treatment, answered

Anything else? Call us on 1300 356 777, Monday to Friday.

What happens at a TMJ assessment?

We look at how your jaw opens and moves, check the muscles for tenderness, examine your bite and go through your symptoms. Then we explain what we found, your treatment options and the costs.

What is TMJ disorder?

The temporomandibular joints connect your jaw to your skull and let you open, close, chew and speak. When a joint or the muscles around it become irritated, inflamed or strained, it’s called temporomandibular disorder (TMD). It can build gradually or come on after stress, injury or grinding.

Can jaw problems cause headaches?

They can. Headaches, neck tension and ear discomfort are sometimes connected to the jaw joints and muscles, which is why a proper assessment matters.

What is an occlusal splint?

A custom appliance made for your bite, usually worn at night. It reduces the effects of grinding and clenching and protects your teeth from wear.

How much does TMJ treatment cost?

It depends on what your assessment finds and the treatment you choose. We’ll give you clear pricing before anything starts. Payment plans are available through Afterpay, humm and smile.com.au, including 0% interest options (eligibility criteria apply).

Can I claim on my health fund?

We accept all health funds. What you can claim depends on your policy and the treatment, so we’ll give you the details after your assessment to check with your fund.

Where are you, and is there parking?

We’re on the ground level of the Bunnings Newstead complex at Shop E, 142 Breakfast Creek Rd, with entry via the Bunnings carpark. There’s 2 hours of free undercover parking, and bus stop 12 (Breakfast Creek Rd at Newstead House) is a 3-minute walk.
